Watch but cant record freeview except BBC?

I live in the surrey countryside, i have a goodmans ghdd1785dvbt freeview hard drive recorder and i can watch many channels but can only record bbc channels. Does anyone else have this problem and how do i solve it? Is it a fault of the recorder or is it that the BBC has a strong enough signal to allow recording. I use a big roof ariel with a booster.
