Can I legally own a portion of two competing businesses?

I just started an LLC with a friend of mine. Through my business dealings, I have recently met a venture capitalist that wants to start a similar business. He and my partner could not come to an agreement, so he suggested that we create a new start up with out my partner. Is it legal to own a portion of both ventures, if they compete with one another? What are your thoughts on this?
