If you disagree with someone from EU why do they ask if you are an American?

It is as if you're only allowed one set of ideals and if you don't follow them you're an American. I feel as if western europe is the borg collective and trying to imilate the world at large into their sweaty folds. Either that or they seem to imagine only Western Europe and the USA has internet?
